Bravo! Hong Kong Youth Theatre Awards Scheme 2019-20

Bravo! is a 1.5-year bilingual acting and life-skills programme based in Hong Kong, Taipei and London for full-time students aged 13-18 who are passionate about theatre. Intensive professional acting training at tertiary level, taught by tutors from Hong Kong and the London Academy of Music & Dramatic Art (LAMDA), were provided in this programme.

Due to the pandemic, LAMDA tutors could not travel to Hong Kong for the final acting workshop. The workshop was taken online and the young actors worked very hard to prepare for the final auditions.

This was a precious opportunity to learn how to interpret a character well. It tested my patience learning to work on the details but it gave me enormous satisfaction and a sense of achievement.

I found it hard to keep a steady gaze. Oliver pointed out that I have a tendency to look around constantly while reading my lines. In the end I had to push hard to meet his expectations and find my true voice. It turned out decently well.

Voice and Combat Training

Bravo! International was cancelled as a result of travel restrictions during the pandemic. After numerous discussions with LAMDA, a voice & combat training was arranged locally for Bravo! 4 actors. LAMDA’s former Head of Drama Rodney Cottier came to Hong Kong in person and undertook two weeks of quarantine. In spite of a series of challenges and difficulties during the training, the Bravo! 4 actors demonstrated remarkable commitment and resilience.

I’ve learnt that acting is nuanced. Even a simple movement should have meaning and intent and all of this contributes to the physical storytelling of a performance.

Acknowledging and facing our own feelings is a very difficult task. Acting is not simply to give emotions to the lines through dramatic speaking and acting out a set of choreographed moves. It is to connect yourself to the play, and to share your understanding and feelings about it with the audience.

Ashley Wong
Bravo! 2019-20 Graduate (Physical Theatre)

I have learnt how to relax my body, breathe and speak using my diaphragm. This helps me project my voice on stage. I also improved my clarity of speech and learnt about pronunciation and components of voice.

In this training, I learnt a lot about Shakespeare and the way to deliver the script. Even though I have performed in Shakespeare plays before, there were a lot of details that I either forgot or didn’t know before, i.e. iambic pentameter. I think this training reminded me why I enjoy acting so much even though I haven’t actively taken part in so long.

Adam Chan
Bravo! 2013-14 Graduate (Classic Theatre)

The Bravo! actors started classes and rehearsals with varying degrees of training and talent. What they all had in common was how much they improved throughout the process! Most of the students showed a passion for learning and growth, and it was a joy to see them succeed.
